Señorita Julia

returning to the Colony Theatre

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa premieres Senorita Julia, a Flamenco Theatre work by Ilisa Rosal,on 5/23 and 5/24/2026 at the Colony Theatre, inspired by August Strindberg’siconic play, "Miss Julie". The work features guest artists from Spain, accompanied by the extraordinary dancers and musicians of Ballet Flamenco La Rosa, an International professional Flamenco company based in Miami.

This  realistic tragedy, written in 1888, is as relevant today as it was then. The work explores love, lust, social class and the battle of the sexes. It is a complex story, exploring deep emotion and complex psychological issues, with the language of Flamenco music and dance.

The characters struggle with trauma, desire, societal constraints and expectations, classism, and survival. Miss Julie has been called one of the first feminist plays, and has been popular since its premeire, when it came very close to being banned. In fact, it holds th distinction of having been performed every single year since its original performance.

For this groundbreaking intertrepation of the iconic play, Artistic Director Ilisa Rosal brings together as guest artists two stellar lead dancers, a magnificent guitarist and singer and a supporting cast of the company's finest dancers, to interpret this masterpiece. Flamenco, with its fierce althleticism, breathtaking footwork, gorgeous line and mobement, and exquisite music, is a a perfect idiom to interpret the timeless and universal story and characters of this classic play.
